​​Kentish-born British Artist Karen Birchwood began her creative career as a textile designer specialising in print design. She worked for many years in London for one of the leading textile design studios in the UK. Establishing herself as one of their bestselling designers and becoming Head designer during her time with the textiles studio before going on to set up her own studio. During her career as a designer she created exceptional designs for both fashion and furnishing fabrics for many well-known companies including Laura Ashley, Miss Selfridge, Monsoon and also Marks and Spencers. Karen also produced a popular range of ceramics and tableware for the interiors store Habitat.

in 2004 Karen left London and returned to Kent where she was able to follow her long held desire to paint. Her background as a designer has played an important role in how she interprets her subject matter. Working in her distinctive style, Karen Birchwood produces landscape and floral themed paintings mainly using acrylic and mixed media on canvas, board and paper. The stunning landscape of Kent and the South coast provides much of her inspiration along with her garden at home. Karen creates an impression of what 'catches her eye', in response and reflection of her surroundings. Her landscape paintings are driven by vibrant colour, expressive mark making, texture and abstracted form. Her trees, flowers and foliage is stylised and meadows, woods and hills blend into one another. Karen's unique paintings have a strong sense of movement as well as elements of abstract patterning no doubt inspired by her many years working in textile pattern design.
